SHERSHAH TOMB - OCTAGONAL WONDER

Shershah a afghan ruler of India, has many contributions in Indian history, but his last sleeping place is a must see attraction. Nice example of magnificent architect, Shershah tomb is situated in Sasaram, A district town of Bihar. His  birth name was Farid Khan, also known as Sher Khan because he alone hunted a Lion in his early age in Sherghati, Bihar.
One of the great Muslim rulers of India, Sher Shah Suri was born in 1486 at Sasaram and died May 22, 1545 at Kalinjar. He was One of eight sons of Ḥasan Khan. His father was a horse breeder.  At the Battle of Chausa on June 26, 1539, he defeated the Mughal emperor Humayun and  in May 1540 at Kannauj he again defeated Humayun and became sultan of Delhi. Shershah was Sultan of Delhi from  17 May 1540  to  15 May 1545 and his works are remembered.

Come to the tomb of Shershah. The tomb is a great specimen of the Pathan architecture in India. NDTV tells it is among seven Wonders of India. Sher Shah Suri Tomb surrounded by a beautiful big lake. Its amazing.  This is a red sandstone mausoleum with 122 ft height,  built on a platform surrounded by water. It is octagonal in shape and red stone & bricks are used. It was completed on August 16,1545 AD, three months after the death of Shershah. It combines soberness with elegance. Sher Shah's tomb is a must-visit for anyone interested in architecture, or for that matter, history in general. It is a protected monument by archaeological Survey of India (ASI). The grave of Shershah lies in center of hall.

SHERGARH - You can also visit Shergarh fort, situated 30 km south west from Sasaram town. It is a ruined hill fort built by Shershah.

How  to reach  Sasaram is a railway station on Grand cord line. Shershah tomb is just two kilometer from railway station very near to Grand Trunk road. ( Nation highway no 2) You can get a cycle rickshaw or can walk also.  Any one can get train from any metropolitan cities of India to sasaram. It is just 90 km from Mughalsarai railway junction.  

Opening time -  Everyday, Sunrise to sunset. It is a ticketed monument. You have to pay INR 5 ( for Indian citizens).
